Born in Napier in 1961 into a family of portrait photographers,
Geralds parents introduced Gerald to Portraiture and the amazing world
of photography, at the same time he started school. So destiny decided
early in life that Gerald would grow up with a camera in hand... By the
age of 10 he was behind a camera capturing images for his Mum and Dad's
Studio.
"I can remember riding my Raleigh20 with my 35mm CanonQL in the
saddle bag, down Fairy Springs Road in Rotorua, to a very cool 'Big
Tex'. This was the 'in' place for young children to have their birthday
parties and parents loved it, as they did not have to clean up! Real
revolutionary back then.
My job at these parties, was to photograph each child , which I had to do standing on a seat.
I was seen doing the same for Mum and Dads weddings clients, where at the Wedding Receptions, I had to photograph the guests.
When I look back, I remember Mum and Dads amazement at how
successful I was at getting the job done. Realizing now the wedding
guests were seeing this young boy doing the job of a mature
professional Photographer, I can now conclude the wedding guests were
totally amused by me. This helped my course no end, giving me some
great expression.
It must have been really humorous to see, however looking back, it
was a fantastic foundation, one that many portrait photographers would
have loved and in my case, was given to me by my parents. I truly have
fond memories of those days when my passion for photography was born.
